Zappos PinPointing Service Recommends Products Based on Your Pinterest Profile

Popular online store Zappos has released a service that recommends products based on a user’s Pinterest pins.

Bloomberg’s Danielle Kucera reports how the new service, PinPointing, has been launched by the Zappos Labs team in San Francisco.

Zappos apparently got approval for the new service from Pinterest, though the companies aren’t officially teaming up in any way.

I tried getting recommendations for the Total Pinterest account, but PinPointing wouldn’t suggest anything — fair enough, given that we mostly pin Pinterest marketing tips!

Trying some different accounts, I found the recommendations to be very hit and miss:

  • pinned shoes resulted in some shoe recommendations, but not necessarily very good ones
  • photos of objects and landscapes seemed to be mistaken for shoes

PinPointing Recommendations

It’s early days for the PinPointing service, so I’m sure their algorithm will be improving over time. Results will no doubt be best for people who regularly pin the kinds of products that Zappos sells.

This is an innovate new way of tapping into Pinterest. Perhaps when Pinterest release their API it will become possible for retailers to integrate with Pinterest more closely and use Pinterest profiles to personalise product recommendations within the retailer’s main website, in email marketing, etc.
